Touch Surgery – the video

“How can you start doing anything with healthcare apps when there are over 40,000 of them out there?” I was asked at least ten times at EHI Live this week. My answer was that there are only some 0.5% of those that are what I call “medical apps”, that really deserve attention, now. These are apps that for example might either meet, or be close to meeting, the definition of a medical device in the Medical Devices Directive 93/42EC: that have the power to do great harm if in error, and great good if properly constructed and maintained. “Events, dear boy, events”

Events, dear boy...

Harold Macmillan probably never said that in response to the question “What is most likely to blow a government off course?”, however we thought we’d use the quote to highlight a few cracking events coming up. The Wearable Technology event, is being hosted by the Digital Catapult Centre, on 18th November, in London. On the topic of wearables, the BBC’s “the Bottom Line” had a great programme on 30th October on the subject. In the UK (at least) you can download a podcast or listen on iPlayer. Save the day – 7 Oct

Hello everyone. Just a short note to ask you to keep the 7th October in your diaries for the next DHACA-Day. It will be held at Anfield football ground in Liverpool. Current plans are to invite the Liverpool Mi dallas project, and the North West Coastal AHSN to spend an hour or so each telling us about their achievements and aspirations, as well as a presentation on how suppliers can use service providers to trial new software & hardware, and elicit customer requirements, plus a stadium tour for anyone who would like to go on it. We will also have

Newsletter July (2)

Hello everyone. In this newsletter we cover the first DHACA-Day last Friday, including the output, in terms of Special Interest Group (SIG) engagement, the DH’s latest consultation, on information, and additions to resources on the website. Every presentation was well received; these are now available under the Resources tab in the members’ section of the website. Informal feedback at the time was that the event

EU Green Paper on mHealth

This week the European Commission published its green paper on mHealth previously announced in the eHealth Action Plan 2012-2020, kicking off a broad stakeholder consultation on existing barriers and issues related to mHealth deployment and helping to identify the right way forward to unlock mHealth potential. To accompany it, a very short video by Neelie Kroes is available. An accompanying short (10 page) paper by the EC on the current legal position for people using health & wellbeing apps is also well worth a read. Finally, to complete the set, the EC has produced an mHealth infographic as well. Responses

DHACA exceeds 220 members

Scalability

Digital Health and Care AllianceDHACA (Digital Health and Care Alliance) has recently exceeded 220 members. Meanwhile, the DHACA core team within i-focus are busy preparing the first events and working out the governance details. The intention is that once this initial phase is over, members themselves will have the most important say in how DHACA is run, and what are its priority activities.  To get things started, we are proposing a number of Special Interest Groups (SIGs) in the following areas
